CODA - Centre for Digital Culture and Innovation joins forces with Wikimedia Portugal, Wikimedia España, and Wikimedia Italia to invite the academic community and other interested parties to participate in the opening day of Porto Meeting: Meeting of Wikimedia communities in minoritized and minoritized languages, which will take place on June 16th at FLUP's Amphitheatre 2. The focus will be on Iberian minority languages.
The program of this first day aims to foster interaction between the Wikimedia community and the academic community. In addition to welcoming members of minority language communities, there will be reflections on the past and present of these languages and presentations of recovery projects, including those involving Wikimedia. On the following days, June 17th and 18th, Wikimedians from minoritized languages will discuss the state of their wikis and ways to collaborate and enhance their activities. At the end of this meeting, the goal is to produce a declaration of principles and a common action plan that will be associated with the city of Porto.
The Wikimedia platforms have been instrumental in the development of tools by academia and industry for information mapping, processing, and language purposes. An increasing number of GLAM institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) are associating their digital collections with Wikidata, the largest current knowledge network, including institutions such as NOVA FCSH, University of Edinburgh, Museo Reina Sofía, MoMA, The British Museum, and Smithsonian Archives of American Art. In addition to facilitating connections and cross-referencing with various sources, Wikidata provides data redundancy and security for institutional data. The importance of Wikipedia is also emphasized, as it uses academic knowledge as its primary reference, exponentially increasing its dissemination and social impact.
The Wikimedia projects are built on the premise of linguistic diversity. They stem from collective efforts to make it possible to access the maximum amount of information and knowledge in as many languages as possible. Apart from facilitating access to the sum of all knowledge, these projects serve to protect minoritized or minority languages.
