CODA and Carlos Silva - professor at the UC of Romance Linguistics, of the Language Sciences degree - organize two open classes / practical workshops dedicated to the theme of automatic calculation of distances between languages. These workshops follow on from the open class “Galego, Portuguese, Castilian and its varieties – Automatic measurement of distances between languages” on March 22nd. Both sessions will have the face-to-face support of CODA elements.
“Calculation of distances between languages using Swadesh lists”
Carlos Silva (CLUP | FLUP)
room 206, FLUP
May 24, 10:00 am - 11:30 am
In this workshop, participants will use small Swadesh lists of Romance languages spoken in the Iberian Peninsula and Portuguese creoles with phonetic and orthographic transcription to calculate and visualize phonetic and lexical distances between them. Room 206 is already equipped with computers, but those interested can bring their laptop and install the necessary software in class.
“Calculation of distances between languages using large corpora”
José Ramom Pichel (Proxecto Nós | CiTIUS – U. Santiago de Compostela)
DEPER room, FLUP
May 26, 8:30am - 11:30am
In this workshop, participants will learn how to collect large corpora from Wikipedia projects for the various Iberian Romance languages, then apply methods to extract linguistic distances from n-gram, which also contains syntactic and morphological information.
